Phones, tablets, headphones, cameras, torches... the number of devices we charge on a trip keeps growing. Having good USB and 12V sockets spread around the camper van is one of those comforts that make a real difference day to day. What's more, charging directly at 12V is more efficient than doing it through an inverter. Let's see how to make the most of them.

Why charge at 12V instead of through an inverter

When you charge your phone with a normal charger plugged into an inverter, there's a double conversion (12V to 230V and back down to 5V), and energy is lost at each conversion. Charging directly from a 12V USB socket avoids these losses: it's more efficient and uses less battery. For small devices, it's the best option.

Useful types of sockets

  • USB-A and USB-C: USB-C with Power Delivery (PD) charges light laptops and modern phones quickly. It's worth having both.
  • 12V socket (cigarette-lighter type): versatile, for car chargers, a small portable fridge, and so on.
  • Sockets with a voltmeter showing the status, useful for keeping an eye on things.

Where to fit them

Think about where you actually use your devices:

  • Next to the bed: to charge your phone overnight without cables trailing across the floor.
  • In the living area and at the table: for working or watching series.
  • In the cab: for the GPS or your phone while driving.
  • Near the kitchen for small appliances.

Smart charging, no waste

Even though each charge is small, it all adds up. Unplug chargers when they're not charging anything (some draw power even when idle) and don't leave devices plugged in unnecessarily.
