Portugal is one of the best destinations for a motorhome trip from Spain: it's right next door, it's affordable, it has breathtaking scenery and wonderfully friendly people. From the green, monumental north to the postcard Algarve, it's worth a week or a month. That said, before crossing the border there's one detail you absolutely need to know, because it can land you with a hefty fine. Let's get to the routes, and to that warning.
The important warning: overnight stays in Portugal
Pay attention to this. Since 2021, Portugal has banned motorhomes from staying overnight outside designated sites (areas and campsites). You can't sleep wherever you like as was sometimes done in the past: only in motorhome car parks and campsites, under penalty of fines that can be quite steep. North: historic cities and coast
The Portuguese north is beautiful and less crowded. Braga and Guimarães (the cradle of Portugal), colourful Aveiro with its canals, Viana do Castelo and, of course, Porto, with its riverside and its wine cellars. An ideal area to start if you enter via Galicia.
Centre: Lisbon, Sintra and the coast
Further down, Lisbon is a must-see, and very close by you'll find magical Sintra with its palaces and the wild coast of Cascais. The Costa Vicentina, between the Alentejo and the Algarve, offers spectacular cliffs and beaches for nature lovers.
South: the Algarve
The Algarve is the great draw: golden-sand beaches, ochre cliffs, hidden coves and mild weather almost all year round, which makes it perfect in winter too. It's the most touristy area, so in summer it pays to get up early and book ahead.
Route ideas
- One week, north: Galicia, Braga, Guimarães, Aveiro and Porto.
- One week, south: entering via Extremadura, Lisbon, Sintra and the Algarve.
- Full north to south: two or three weeks to see it at a relaxed pace, without rushing.
Practical tips
- Tolls: some Portuguese motorways use electronic tolling; find out how to pay them with a foreign number plate to avoid building up debts.
- Up-to-date documentation and insurance, as for any trip abroad.
- Language: you'll get by fine in Spanish, but a couple of phrases in Portuguese always help.
