Aragón is one of Spain's largest and, at the same time, most sparsely populated regions, which makes it a haven of tranquillity for motorhomers. From the high Pyrenees to the lands of Teruel, taking in Zaragoza along the way, it offers mountains, stone villages, monasteries and landscapes all to yourself. Here are some ideas for touring it (beyond the Pyrenees, which we cover separately).
The Aragonese Pyrenees
The high mountains: Ordesa, Benasque, the valleys. We cover this in its own guide (see the Aragonese Pyrenees). A must for mountain lovers.
Zaragoza and the centre
Zaragoza, with its Basílica del Pilar and historic centre, deserves a stop (park outside and walk into the centre). Nearby, the Monasterio de Piedra with its waterfalls is a spectacular oasis, as are the Monegros, a surprising semi-desert.
Teruel: the great unknown
The province of Teruel is one of the most sparsely populated and beautiful in Spain: Albarracín (one of the country's prettiest villages), the Teruel Maestrazgo with its stone villages (Cantavieja, Mirambel), the Ojos Negros mines, and the protected landscape of the Rodeno pine forests. Nature, clear skies and solitude. "Teruel exists", and it's wonderful for motorhoming.
Practical tips
- Spring and autumn are ideal; summer is hot inland and winter very cold.

- Carry spare water: very sparsely populated areas.
- Enjoy the calm: here you'll have most places to yourself.
