Of all the components in a motorhome's electrical installation, fuses are the cheapest and the ones that prevent the most trouble. Their job is simple but vital: cut the current when something goes wrong, before a cable overheats and starts a fire. Skipping them or fitting the wrong ones is playing with fire, literally. Let's understand how they work and how to fit them correctly.
What a fuse protects (and what it doesn't)
Here's an important nuance: the fuse protects the cable, not the appliance. If a short circuit sends more current than the cable can handle, the fuse blows and cuts the flow before the cable heats up dangerously. That's why a fuse is chosen based on the cable it protects, not on the appliance.
Where fuses go
- The main fuse: as close as possible to the battery's positive terminal. It protects the whole main line. It's the most important one and the one most people forget.
- One fuse per line coming off the panel to an appliance or group (lights, pump, fridge, inverter...).
- Dedicated protection for high-draw appliances like the inverter.
How to work out the rating
The fuse should be rated somewhat above the line's normal current, but below what the cable can handle. In other words: not so low it trips for no reason, not so high it fails to protect. The classic mistake is fitting a huge fuse "so it doesn't trip"; that's like removing the brakes. If it trips, there's a reason: find it, don't ignore it.
Types of protection
- Blade fuses (the automotive type): for small lines.
- High-capacity fuses (MEGA or ANL type) for the main line and the inverter.
- Circuit breakers (automatic): reset instead of being replaced; convenient for 230 V.
- RCD (residual current device): essential on the 230 V side to protect people (see earthing).
The mistake that causes the most fires
