You check the app and it says 70%. You trust it, keep running the fridge and the lights... and suddenly, in the middle of the night, the battery cuts out. What happened? Most likely, that 70% wasn't real. State of charge, or SoC, is the single most important figure in your setup, but it's only useful if it's measured correctly. What SoC is
SoC is the percentage of energy left in your battery, like the battery bar on your phone. 100% is full; 0% is empty. Sounds simple, but measuring it accurately in a battery has its tricks.
Why voltage is misleading (especially in lithium)
A lot of people estimate charge from voltage. It works reasonably well with lead-acid batteries, but with lithium (LiFePO4) it's very unreliable, because the voltage stays almost flat through most of the discharge: a lithium battery at 80% and at 30% show very similar voltages. Trusting voltage with lithium is like guessing. That's why you need a different way to measure it.
The measurement that actually works: the shunt
The reliable way to know the SoC is to have a shunt: a sensor that tracks every amp going in and out of the battery. Knowing the total capacity and keeping a running tally of what's used and recovered, it calculates the real percentage. It's like keeping an exact account balance instead of just glancing at your wallet.

How to use SoC day to day
- Don't always run it down to the limit: even though lithium handles deep discharges, leaving a small margin gives you peace of mind.
- Relate the SoC to your consumption: if you know you use 30% per night, a 50% SoC clearly tells you you'll be fine.
- Watch the trend, not just the number: seeing whether it drops fast or slow warns you of unusual consumption.
