The first time you get behind the wheel of a motorhome, it's a bit daunting: it's bigger, taller and heavier than your car. But the good news is that driving it is easier than it looks, and you feel comfortable in no time. With a few tips and some practice, you'll build confidence quickly. Here are the keys.
What's different compared with a car
- Size and overhang: it's longer, especially at the back (the rear overhang), which matters when turning and reversing.
- Height: you need to be very aware of it (petrol stations, tunnels, branches, barriers). Note it down and always keep it in mind.
- Weight: it brakes and accelerates differently; stopping distances are longer. Anticipate.
- Wind: being tall with a large side area, you'll notice crosswinds and lorries overtaking more.
Tips for building confidence
- Practise first somewhere quiet: an empty industrial estate or open ground to get a feel for the dimensions and manoeuvres.
- Use your mirrors well: they're your eyes; you don't have a useful rear-view mirror. A reversing camera helps enormously.
- Take it slow: a motorhome isn't for rushing. Driving calmly is safer, more comfortable and uses less fuel.
- Anticipate bends and turns: swing out a little on tight turns to account for the vehicle's length.
- Reversing is easier with help: get someone to guide you from outside until you've had some practice.
Your licence and the weight
