The chemical toilet is one of those topics that makes everyone starting out feel a bit awkward, and nobody explains well. How it works
The chemical toilet has a cassette (a removable tank) underneath, which collects the waste. A fluid is added that breaks down the waste and controls odours. When it's full, the cassette is removed through an outside hatch and emptied at designated points.
How to use it properly
- Add the right fluid to the cassette (there are types for the lower tank and, optionally, for the upper flush tank).
- Use toilet paper made for chemical toilets (it breaks down better and doesn't clog) or paper that dissolves easily.
- Only open the valve when using it and close it afterwards, so odours don't rise.
- Don't flush anything other than paper and waste: wipes, sanitary items, etc. clog it up.
How to empty it (without the drama)
- Only at designated points: stopover areas have a specific toilet or drain for the cassette. Never in the countryside or drains not meant for it.
- Empty it often, without waiting for it to be completely full, to make it more pleasant and less smelly.
- Rinse the cassette with water after emptying and add fresh fluid.
- Use gloves; it's a matter of hygiene, not difficulty.
