Motorhome prepared and cleaned for sale

There comes a time when you need to sell the motorhome: to swap it for another, because your life has changed, or for whatever reason. And selling it well (at the best price, quickly and without any nasty surprises) is something of a skill. Good preparation is the difference between selling it fast at a good price or having it listed for months. Here are the key tips.

Prepare the vehicle

First impressions are everything. Before listing it:

  • Clean it thoroughly, inside and out (see exterior cleaning). A clean, tidy camper looks better cared for and is worth more.
  • Fix small details: a bulb, a seal, a dent; otherwise they give an impression of neglect.
  • Check that everything works: fridge, heating, water, electrics. Buyers will test it.
  • Pass the vehicle inspection and keep maintenance up to date; it builds confidence.

Set a realistic price

Research the price similar models are selling for (same year, mileage, condition) so you're neither overpriced nor underselling. Too high a price leaves it unsold for months; too low, and you're giving money away. Be honest about the condition and leave a small margin for negotiation.

Paperwork in order

  • Vehicle registration documents up to date, with any conversions properly approved and recorded (see getting a conversion approved).
  • Valid vehicle inspection and, if it has gas, the relevant certificate.
  • Proof it's free of charges and up to date with taxes.
  • Prepare the sale contract and handle the transfer of ownership.

The listing that sells

  • Good photos: well-lit, clean, showing the interior, exterior and details. Photos sell.
  • Honest, complete description: equipment, condition, mileage, the good points and what could be improved.
  • Respond quickly and kindly to interested buyers.

In short

Selling your motorhome well means preparing it (clean, repaired, inspection up to date), setting a realistic price, having the paperwork in order and making a good listing with honest photos. The step to take today: before listing it, spend a day cleaning it thoroughly and fixing small details, and take good photos; that preparation is what speeds up the sale and improves the price the most.

A well-cared-for camper is worth more
