When you decide to put solar panels on your camper, a fork in the road appears almost immediately: rigid or flexible? Both generate electricity from the sun, but they mount differently, last differently and cost differently. Choosing well depends above all on what your roof is like and on what you prioritise. Let's compare them so you get it right.
Rigid panels: the classic, long-lasting option
These are the "traditional" panels, with an aluminium frame and glass, mounted on brackets a few centimetres clear of the roof.
- In favour: greater durability and output, better heat dissipation (air circulates underneath, and heat reduces the output of any panel), and they tend to be more efficient and cheaper per watt.
- Against: they stand proud of the roof (a little more height and wind resistance), and mounting them calls for brackets.
Flexible panels: light and discreet
These are thin and can be curved, and they are bonded directly onto the roof, sitting almost flush.
- In favour: very light, discreet (barely visible), they follow curved roofs and add no height.
- Against: because they sit flat against the roof, they dissipate heat worse and tend to deliver less and last less; on top of that, if they fail they are harder to peel off and replace. They are usually dearer per watt.
Which to choose
- Rigid: the sensible option for most people if your roof allows it, for durability and output. Better for anyone after long-term runtime.
- Flexible: if you have a curved roof, if weight and height matter a lot to you (for instance, so you don't lose access to a car park), or if you want to stay discreet.

Rigid panels last longer and deliver more thanks to better heat dissipation; flexible ones are light, discreet and suited to curved roofs, but usually last less. The step you can take today: if your roof is flat and accessible, rigid panels are the more profitable bet in the long run; keep flexible ones for curved roofs or when weight and height are critical.
