You're about to fit lithium batteries for customers, and a reasonable question comes up: if something goes wrong one day, who's responsible, and with what paperwork? Lithium battery regulations sound like boring red tape, but they're actually your safety net. Knowing what each standard requires, and what documentation to ask the manufacturer for, protects you as much as your customer.
Let's go through the references that genuinely matter for a battery fitted in a vehicle, what each one guarantees, and how to check they're not just decorative stamps.
IEC 62133:2022 — cell and battery safety
This is the international reference standard for the safety of rechargeable lithium cells and batteries. It defines the tests a battery must pass to be considered safe in normal use and under foreseeable fault conditions: short circuit, overcharge, crushing, thermal shock, vibration, among others.
In practice, a battery meeting IEC 62133:2022 (the current version of the standard) means it has passed an internationally recognised battery of safety tests, not just a manufacturer's self-declaration. It's the baseline you'll always want to see.
UN 38.3 — safe transport
Any lithium battery that's transported (by road, sea or air) must pass the UN 38.3 tests, set out in the UN Manual of Tests and Criteria. These include altitude, thermal cycling, vibration, impact, overcharge and short-circuit tests.
Why does this matter to you as a workshop? Because without a UN 38.3 certificate a battery can't legally be transported, and because it's an extra guarantee that the battery behaves safely under stresses that also occur in a moving vehicle. If a supplier can't show you this document, that's a red flag.
CE marking — conformity for the European market
The CE mark indicates the product complies with the applicable European directives. For a battery with electronics, one of the relevant ones is the Electromagnetic Compatibility directive (EMC, Directive 2014/30/EU), which ensures the equipment doesn't generate or suffer interference that could affect other systems in the vehicle.
CE isn't a stamp a manufacturer just applies: it must be backed by technical documentation demonstrating conformity. As an installer, you're entitled to ask for that declaration of conformity.
RoHS — restriction of hazardous substances
The RoHS directive (EU 2015/863) limits the use of certain hazardous substances (lead, mercury, cadmium and others) in electrical and electronic equipment. For your end customer, it's an environmental and health guarantee; for you, it's one more piece of the file proving the product is manufactured to European standards.
ISO 9001 — the manufacturer, not just the product
The previous ones certify the product. ISO 9001 certifies something different but equally important: that the manufacturer has an audited quality management system. In practice, this means controlled processes, traceability, and consistency batch to batch. When you buy repeatedly, that consistency is what stops surprises between one shipment and the next.
How to check they're not just decorative stamps
Listing acronyms is easy; backing them up isn't. Three concrete checks:
- Ask for the reports, not just the logo. A serious manufacturer can provide you with the UN 38.3 certificate, the IEC 62133 test report and the CE declaration of conformity.
- Check the version and date. Standards get updated; that's why it matters to see IEC 62133:2022 rather than a generic reference with no year.
- Confirm the certificate matches the exact model you're going to fit, not a different one in the range.
