Of all the appliances in your camper, the fridge is almost always the one that uses the most energy, because it cycles on and off all day and all night. That makes choosing the right type of fridge more than a detail: it shapes your electrical runtime and, in summer, the difference between fresh food and spoiled food. Let's look at the three types that exist, their real consumption and which one suits you.
Compressor fridge: the one to go for
It works like the one at home, with a compressor, but adapted to 12 V. It's the most widespread option in modern campers, and with good reason:
- In favour: it cools hard and fast, works well in high outside temperatures, holds a stable temperature and is the most efficient for what it delivers. Some even freeze.
- Against: a higher purchase price. But in exchange it gives you the best real-world performance.
It's the sensible choice for most people, above all if you travel in summer or spend days without a hook-up.
Absorption fridge: the gas veteran
It works without a compressor, through a chemical cycle, and can run on gas, 12 V or 230 V (the so-called three-way models). It was very common in classic motorhomes.
- In favour: it can run on gas without touching the battery, it's silent and useful on long stays connected to gas.
- Against: it cools less well when it's very hot outside, it's sensitive to the vehicle being level and, on 12 V, it uses a fair amount.
Thermoelectric fridge: only to get by
The typical "Peltier" car cool boxes. They're cheap, but let's be clear here: they barely cool (only a few degrees below ambient) and they use a lot, continuously. They're fine for a day trip, not as the fridge of a camper you live in. We don't recommend one as your main solution.
The factor that decides everything: consumption
Since the fridge is your biggest electrical load, its consumption shapes much of your runtime. A medium-sized compressor fridge can run to around 300-600 Wh a day depending on the model, the outside temperature and how often you open it (check the data sheet for yours). That figure is the basis for sizing your battery and your panels; you feed it into the calculation in how much battery you need and back it up with solar panels.
Tricks to make it use less
- Fit it with ventilation at the back: if the heat it generates can't escape, it works harder and uses more.
- Don't open it more than necessary and don't fill it with warm things.
- Keep it away from heat sources (direct sun, the hob).
In short
For living or travelling seriously, the compressor fridge is the option to go for on efficiency and performance; absorption makes sense if you favour gas on long stays; and thermoelectric only to get by. The step you can take today: find the daily consumption in Wh of the fridge you have or want, because it's the number that weighs most in calculating your electrical runtime.
