In the more complete electrical installations you find in motorhomes, there's a component that raises questions: the inverter-charger, an "all-in-one" device that combines two functions in a single box. What advantages does it have over having a separate inverter and charger? When does it pay off? Here's a clear explanation, no jargon.

What an inverter-charger is

Let's recap two components of the installation:

  • The inverter converts the battery's 12 V into 220 V for household sockets (see the inverter).
  • The mains charger charges the battery when you're plugged into 220 V (at a campsite) (see the charger).

The inverter-charger integrates both functions into a single unit: it inverts when you're running on battery and charges when you plug in, switching between the two automatically.

The advantages

  • Saves space and wiring: one unit instead of two.
  • Automatic management: it switches on its own between inverting (off-grid) and charging/passing through mains power (plugged in), with no input from you.
  • "Power assist" function: good units can add the battery's power to the mains supply when the campsite's hook-up is limited, stopping the fuses tripping when you use large appliances.
  • Integration: they usually communicate well with the rest of the system (battery, monitor).

The downsides

  • Price: a good inverter-charger is a bigger investment than basic separate units.
  • If it fails, both functions fail at once (versus having independent units).
  • It can be overkill for simple installations.

When does it pay off?

It makes sense in medium or large installations, especially if you use 220 V a lot (induction hob, powerful appliances) and want convenience plus the power-assist function with the mains supply. For a basic installation, separate units may be enough.
