Comparing batteries without understanding their spec sheet is like comparing cars by only looking at the colour. Those figures with odd abbreviations (Ah, DoD, cycles, C-rate) are exactly what separates a good battery from a bad one, and what stops you getting shortchanged. Let's translate the fine print so you can buy with confidence.

Capacity (Ah) and energy (Wh)

Capacity in amp-hours (Ah) tells you how much charge it stores. But watch out: two batteries with the same Ah can give you very different energy depending on their voltage and how much you can discharge them. Energy in watt-hours (Wh) = Ah x voltage, is a more honest measure of what they actually hold.

Depth of discharge (DoD): the most misleading figure

DoD (Depth of Discharge) is how much you can drain the battery without damaging it. Here's the trap in comparing Ah alone: a lead-acid battery is recommended to be discharged only to 50%, while a lithium one can handle 80-100%. That means a 100 Ah lithium battery gives you almost double the usable energy of a 100 Ah lead-acid one. Always check what DoD the figures are based on.

Cycle life

Cycles tell you how many charge-discharge cycles it can take before losing meaningful capacity. But the number only means something if it states at what DoD it was measured. "4,000 cycles at 80% discharge" (like Upcyon batteries) is very different from a number with no context. It's the figure that best reflects real-world lifespan.

Voltage and C-rate (current)

  • Nominal voltage: 12.8 V in a "12 V" LiFePO4, for example.
  • C-rate or maximum current: how much current it can deliver or accept. This matters if you're running powerful appliances (a large inverter) or want to charge fast.

What isn't always shown, and what you should ask for

Beyond the spec sheet, ask about the BMS and its protections (especially cold-charge protection), about auditable certifications (IEC 62133, UN 38.3, CE), and about the warranty. See what a BMS is and the regulations.

To read a battery spec sheet, look at the real energy (Wh), the DoD the figures are based on, the cycle count with its DoD, the voltage and current, plus the BMS and certifications. The one thing to do today: when comparing two batteries, don't just look at the Ah; compare their usable energy (Ah x voltage x DoD) and their cycles at the same DoD; that honest comparison changes a lot of buying decisions.
