Travelling around Europe by motorhome is one of the great pleasures of caravanning, and happily, within the Schengen area, crossing borders is very straightforward. But "straightforward" doesn't mean "no paperwork": having your documents in order and knowing each country's requirements saves you fines and nasty surprises. Here's a summary of what you can't do without.
The basic documents
- A valid national ID card or passport for everyone on board.
- A valid driving licence (an EU licence is valid throughout the EU).
- Vehicle documents: registration document and technical data sheet, with any approved conversions recorded on it (see getting your camper approved).
- Up-to-date insurance covering the countries you visit; carry the proof with you.
- European Health Insurance Card for medical treatment.
Vignettes and tolls
Several countries require a vignette (a road-use sticker or pass) to drive on their motorways: Switzerland, Austria, Czechia, Slovenia, Hungary and others. You buy it before or on arrival (physical or digital), and driving without one is fined. Other countries have classic toll booths (France, Italy, Spain). Check each country on your route. Low-emission zones and stickers
More and more European cities have low-emission zones that require an emissions sticker to enter. France has Crit'Air, Germany its Umweltplakette, and many cities have their own rules. Without the right sticker, you get fined. Since you don't usually take a motorhome into a city centre, parking outside is often enough, but if you're going to drive through cities, sort them out in advance. Other useful documents
- For pets: an EU pet passport, microchip and up-to-date vaccinations (see travelling with a dog).
- Green card / international insurance certificate, depending on the destination.
- Outside the EU (Morocco, the United Kingdom, the Balkans), there are specific requirements: check those separately.
