Every night of a motorhome trip you face the same decision: campsite, motorhome aire, or park and sleep freely? There's no option that's better than the others; there's a better one for each situation, depending on what you need that night: facilities, price, peace and quiet, or nature. Let's compare them so you can choose sensibly.
The campsite: full facilities and camping
The campsite is the most complete option. You get a pitch, electricity, water, showers, toilets, sometimes a pool and play areas, and it's the only place where you can genuinely camp: put out the awning, the table, the chairs and set up your "outdoor living room".
- In favour: total comfort, ideal for stays of several days, families and for genuinely resting.
- Against: it's the most expensive option and sometimes you have to book ahead in high season.
The motorhome aire: the balanced option
Aires are spaces set up specifically for motorhomes, public or private. They usually offer the essentials: a spot to spend the night, a water point and tank-emptying facilities, sometimes electricity. They're the option most used by travellers.
- In favour: good value (many are free or cheap), practical, well located and with the basic facilities. Comfortable and secure.
- Against: you can't camp (no awning or chairs outside) and they fill up in high season.
Free overnight parking: freedom with responsibility
This means parking and sleeping somewhere not specifically designated (a car park, a street where it's allowed). Here the key is the legal difference between overnighting (allowed wherever you can park, with nothing deployed) and camping (banned outside campsites). - In favour: free, maximum freedom and, sometimes, incredible spots.
- Against: no facilities, you have to follow the rules carefully to avoid fines, and it's worth prioritising safety when choosing a spot (we look at this in security and anti-theft).
How to choose depending on the trip
- A long stay, family time or rest: campsite.
- A touring route, moving from place to place: aires, the perfect balance.
- A stopover night or somewhere special: free overnight parking, done sensibly.
Most people combine all three over the course of a single trip, as needed.
