You're about to replace your motorhome's auxiliary battery and keep running into the same question: AGM is cheaper and tried and tested, but everyone's talking about lithium. Is it worth paying more? The honest answer is "it depends how you use it", and this article shows you exactly what it depends on, with figures instead of adjectives.
Both technologies are valid. AGM (a type of sealed lead-acid battery, no liquid maintenance) has worked well for decades. LiFePO4 (lithium iron phosphate, the most stable and safest lithium chemistry for a motorhome) is newer and costs more upfront. What matters is what you get for that money.
Usable capacity: the figure that misleads the most
This is the difference most people overlook. A battery doesn't give you all of its capacity: it gives you the part you can use without damaging it. That's called depth of discharge (DoD), i.e. how far you can drain it before it suffers.
An AGM battery is recommended not to be discharged below 50% if you want it to last. A LiFePO4 battery can be discharged to 80-100% with no meaningful penalty. In practice: a 100 Ah AGM gives you around 50 Ah usable; a 100 Ah lithium battery gives you around 80-100 Ah usable. To have the same energy available, you need nearly twice as much AGM.
Cycles and lifespan
A cycle is one full charge and discharge. The more cycles a battery can take, the more years it lasts before losing capacity.
AGM batteries are typically rated, depending on the manufacturer, at around 300-500 cycles at 50% discharge. Upcyon's LiFePO4 batteries are rated at over 4,000 cycles at 80% discharge. Translated into years: if you use the van every weekend plus the occasional long trip, an AGM may need replacing within a few years, while lithium is built to last the lifetime of the installation. The cost per cycle (what you pay for each usable charge) ends up lower with lithium, even though the upfront price is higher.
Weight: it matters in a motorhome
In a vehicle where every kilo counts towards the MAM (maximum authorised mass), weight isn't a minor detail. For the same usable energy, a lithium installation weighs roughly half or less than the equivalent AGM setup, because you need less nominal capacity and the chemistry itself is lighter. If you're close to your legal payload limit, this can be the deciding factor.
Charging speed
AGM accepts slower charging and, above all, struggles to fill the last stretch: going from 80% to 100% is slow. Lithium accepts more charging current and holds a stable voltage almost to the end, so it makes better use of a sunny morning or a short drive on the alternator. If you charge from solar and don't always have many hours of sun, that difference shows.
When lithium is NOT worth it
To be fair, let's also say what doesn't usually get mentioned. Lithium isn't always the best option:
- Very occasional use: if you take the van out four weekends a year and use little power, an AGM can cover you comfortably and the price difference will take a long time to pay back.
- A very tight upfront budget: lithium costs more to start with. It's an investment that pays off with use and time, not an immediate bargain.
- Extreme cold and unprotected charging: charging lithium below 0°C can damage it permanently. A good BMS solves this by cutting charging in cold conditions, but it's worth knowing about. We cover it in detail in how temperature affects lithium batteries.
The bottom line, side by side
If we had to sum it up: AGM wins on upfront price and simplicity; lithium wins on usable energy, weight, charging speed and lifespan. For frequent or heavy use, lithium pays off. For occasional use on a tight budget, AGM still makes sense.
In short
It isn't about which technology is "better", but about how much energy you need and how often you use the vehicle. If you're going to really live in the van — remote work, compressor fridge, long stretches away — lithium will give you more real autonomy per kilo and many more years. If your use is light and occasional, don't feel obliged to make the jump.
