When talking about motorhome batteries, the duel between lithium and AGM almost always comes up. But there's a third option worth knowing about: the gel battery. It's a type of lead-acid battery, a cousin of AGM, with its own pros and cons. Before deciding, it's worth understanding where it fits, because for some uses it still makes sense.

What a gel battery is

A gel battery is a sealed lead-acid battery in which the electrolyte (the acid) is in gel form rather than liquid. This makes it leak-proof, free of liquid maintenance, and resistant to vibration and tilted positions. Like AGM, it's an evolution of the classic lead-acid battery.

Advantages of gel

  • Very resistant to deep discharges and cycling, somewhat more so than AGM in some cases.
  • Long life if looked after and charged correctly.
  • Sealed and safe, with no emissions, suitable for enclosed spaces.
  • Copes well with heat in general.

Disadvantages

  • Delicate charging: very sensitive to charging voltage; needs a charger with a specific gel profile and a slow charge. An unsuitable charger will ruin it.
  • Expensive for lead-acid: usually costs more than an equivalent AGM.
  • Heavy and with less usable energy than lithium: it shares lead-acid's limitations (you shouldn't discharge it to 100%, and it's heavy).
  • Slow charging: it doesn't accept fast charging.

Gel vs AGM vs lithium

In short: compared with AGM, gel tends to handle certain cycles better but is more expensive and fussier about charging. Compared with lithium, both gel and AGM lose out by a mile on usable energy, weight, cycle life and charging speed: lithium can handle 80-100% discharge, weighs half as much, and lasts far more cycles.
