The Valle de Arán, in the far north-west of Lleida, is a corner of the Pyrenees with a character all its own: it is the only Pyrenean valley oriented towards the Atlantic (its waters flow into the Garonne, towards France), which makes it greener and damper. A different kind of valley
What makes Arán special is its Atlantic orientation: greener, rainier and with a landscape quite different from the rest of the Mediterranean-facing Catalan Pyrenees. It has its own culture and identity (Aranese, an official language). Vielha is the capital of the valley.

The valley preserves a lovely collection of stone Romanesque churches in its villages (Salardú, Arties, Bossòst), with their distinctive bell towers. Mountain villages full of charm, well worth a stop.
