Trail runner setting off from a motorhome in the mountains

For trail running enthusiasts (running in the mountains), the motorhome is an ideal training companion: it takes you to incredible landscapes to train in, lets you sleep next to the start line of races (avoiding impossible early starts), and gives you a base to recover in. It turns every training session into an adventure. Here's how to make the most of it.

Why the camper and trail running go together

  • You train in incredible places: you wake up in the mountains, on the beach or in the forest, and head out to run spectacular trails.
  • Variety: you change terrain and elevation as you move around, ideal for training.
  • For races: you sleep next to the start the night before, rested and without early-morning travel; and you have your base for before and after.
  • Recovery: a shower, food and rest in your own home after the effort.

Training on the road

  • Make the most of your surroundings: plan routes based on where you're staying overnight (trail apps; see apps).
  • Mountain safety: tell someone your route, carry water, a phone, something warm and eat well; don't overestimate your strength (see mountain safety).
  • Minimal gear: trail running needs little (shoes, a light pack), perfect for a camper's limited space.
  • Combine it with rest and good nutrition (see eating well and sleeping well).

Attending races with the camper

Mountain races tend to be held in remote spots, early in the morning. Going with the camper solves the accommodation problem (often scarce), lets you sleep next to the start, arrive rested, warm up, and recover after the finish with everything to hand. Many runners use it for exactly that reason. You'll need energy for a hot shower and recovery (see calculator).

In summary

The camper is the ideal base for trail running: you train in incredible landscapes, sleep next to the start line and recover with everything to hand. The step you can take today: plan your training around where you're staying overnight to run in spectacular places (with mountain safety in mind), and if you have a race, sleep next to the start the night before; you'll arrive rested and recover better. Combine it with exercise and yoga.

Recover well after running

A hot shower and a meal after training call for energy. Calculate your autonomy.
