Electric mobility is moving forward unstoppably, and the camper world is no exception: electric vans that get converted into campers already exist, along with the first electric motorhome projects. But are they ready to replace diesel for camper trips? The honest answer is "it depends", and it's worth understanding clearly where things stand. Let's look at it without enthusiasm or rejection, just the facts.
The big challenge: driving range
The Achilles' heel of today's electric camper is the vehicle's range. A camper is heavy and not very aerodynamic, which reduces real-world range compared with a car. For short getaways and urban or regional use, electric vans already deliver; for the big long-distance trips, range and the charging network are still a significant limitation.
Charging: the second challenge
Charging a large electric vehicle takes time and depends on the charger network. On the road, you have to plan your charging stops, which changes the way you travel. The network is improving fast, but in rural or remote areas (exactly where campers go) it's still uneven.
The advantages it already offers

- Quiet, smooth driving.
- Synergy with the living area: the vehicle's large battery can, in some cases, also power the living space.
- Lower cost per kilometre in electricity compared with fuel.
Where we stand today
The electric camper is already a reality for local use (getaways, weekends, regional routes) and for those who value going electric above long-distance range. For the big touring trips around Europe, diesel is, for now, still more practical. But technology is advancing very fast, and the future clearly points towards electrification.
The other electricity: the living area's
It's worth not confusing two different things: the energy to move the vehicle (the drive battery) and the energy for the living area (the leisure battery, which powers the fridge, lights, etc.). The step to take today: if you're considering an electric camper, be realistic about your type of use (local or long distance) and about the charging network at your destinations; for regional getaways it may already fit, for big routes it's worth waiting for more range.
