Cabo de Gata, in Almería, is one of the most unique and wild corners of the Mediterranean: a natural park of volcanic origin with almost pristine turquoise-water coves, whitewashed fishing villages, salt flats with flamingos and the clearest sky in continental Europe. The must-see coves
- Cala de los Genoveses and Mónsul: the most famous, with golden sand and crystal-clear waters (a film location). In summer, car access is regulated.
- Las Negras, Cala San Pedro (only on foot or by boat), Agua Amarga: postcard corners.
- El Playazo de Rodalquilar, next to a castle.
Beyond the beach
The park is pure volcanic scenery: the Sirenas reef with its lighthouse, the salt flats (with flamingos in season), the mining village of Rodalquilar, and San José as a base. The challenge: overnight stays and regulated access
Being a natural park, overnight stays and access are heavily regulated, especially in summer (when car access to the top coves is limited, with a shuttle bus). You can't camp or stay overnight freely anywhere; use the area's designated sites and campsites and respect the signage (see overnight stopover areas). Looking after this fragile environment is everyone's responsibility.
When to go
Spring and autumn are ideal: good weather, quiet coves and none of the peak-summer restrictions. Summer is spectacular but crowded and with limited access; in winter, the Almería sun makes it appealing too (see Andalusia).
