If there's one concept worth understanding to handle your motorhome's electrics with confidence, it's this: your camper has two separate electrical systems, the 12-volt one and the 230-volt one. Mixing them up, or not knowing which one powers what, is behind a lot of beginner confusion. Let's clear it up once and for all, simply.

The 12V system: the heart of the camper

This is the system that comes from the leisure battery and runs on direct current (the same as a car). It powers almost everything you use day to day: the lights, the fridge (a 12V compressor one), the water pump, the USB sockets, the control panel, the electronics. It always works, wherever you are, as long as you have battery. It's your independence: what lets you live without a hook-up.

The 230V system: like the one at home

This is the 230V alternating current, the same as the sockets in your house. It powers the "household" appliances you plug in with a normal plug. The big difference: it's only available in two cases:

  • When you're hooked up to the mains at a campsite or aire (see the 230V hook-up).
  • When you use an inverter, which converts the 12V from your battery into 230V (see the inverter).

Why the difference matters

  • To know what works without a hook-up: everything on 12V always works; 230V items only work with mains power or an inverter.
  • For efficiency: charging your phone from a 12V USB socket uses less than doing it with a charger plugged into the inverter (see USB sockets).
  • For safety: 12V is low risk for people; 230V is genuinely dangerous and requires earthing and an RCD (see earthing).

How they coexist

The electrical panel manages both systems and keeps them separate with their own protections. The battery powers the 12V circuit; the charger fills the battery when there's mains 230V; the inverter draws 230V from the battery when there's no hook-up. It's a loop. See the electrical panel.
